Babangida (IBB) University, Lapai, Niger State, are likely to go on an
industrial action over non-payment of July salaries of some staff members by the
Niger State Government.
Various labour unions in the University
– academic and non-academic, according to sources who do not want their names
mentioned, will meet on Tuesday, 12th August, 2025, to decide when
to commence the strike action.
Sources within the University said Niger
State Government, who now handles payment of salaries directly to staff
members, omitted so many names from the July 2025 payroll submitted to her by
the University, while salaries of some others were slashed.
Those mostly affected are individuals on
part time employment as they are yet to get their salaries paid as at the time
of filing this report.
Niger State Government, under the
leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, now pays salaries directly to staff
members’ individual bank accounts instead of crediting the University’s account
for onward payment to staff.

This, according to report, is to ensure
transparency in salary payment.
Efforts to reach the University’s Head
of Information, Alhaji Baba Akote, to comment on this have proved abortive as
his mobile number was not reachable.
Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University is
owned by the Government of Niger State, and is named after the former Military
Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd).
If the planned strike action takes
place, it means the School will close its gates against students, barely a week
of resumption after it was shut down by Governor Bago over protest by students
occasioned by alleged incessant attacks on students by the locals.
