International Workers’ Day: Is It Necessary?

Also known as Labour Day or May Day, International Workers’ Day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes.  It is an annual event, observed on 1st May in honour of workers and in recognition of their contributions to economic growth of their respective countries.

The 1st of May is a public holiday in many countries across the world, including Nigeria. Of course this year’s International Workers’ Day falls on a Sunday; hence Monday is announced a public holiday in Nigeria.

Depending on the country, activities marking International Workers’ Day include parades or march-pasts, speeches by labour union leaders and government officials.

According to available records, International Workers’ Day as a holiday in Nigeria was first declared in Kano State in 1980 before it became a national holiday on 1st May 1981.

Meanwhile, the origin of International Workers’ Day dates back to the 1860s when working conditions were harsh, and workers were working 10 to 16 hours. These led to a protest on May 1st 1886 in Chicago and other cities in the United States. They wanted 8-hour workday, among other demands.

Although May 1st is observed as a holiday by governments across the globe, countries like the United States and Canada have their official holiday for workers on the first Monday of September.

Is it necessary for workers to be celebrated? Going by their contributions to global economic sustainability, the answer is yes. Therefore, from all of us at Sirbong Communications  (SBC), we wish all our Clients a happy 2022nd International Workers’ Day celebration.
